More Hell, Fewer Dahlias: The Musings of a Radical Feminist.

RIP Lucille Clifton

Posted on: February 18, 2010

Lucille Clifton died of an infection yesterday. An amazing poet, Ms. Clifton wrote unflinchingly about her struggles with cancer, kidney failure, sexual abuse and the struggles of black women in America. A rare, honest poet, Lucille Clifton will definitely be missed.

New York Times article.

Her poem “these hips” is one of my favorites:

these hips are big hips

they need space to

move around in.

they don’t fit into little

petty places. these hips

are free hips.

they don’t like to be held back.

these hips have never been enslaved,

they go where they want to go

they do what they want to do.

these hips are mighty hips.

these hips are magic hips.

i have known them

to put a spell on a man and

spin him like a top!

An interesting blog by an Episcopal minister has another of her poems up.

RIP Lucille Clifton.
